About
HERE AT NIRGAL.ORG, WE ARE MOTIVATED BY THE FOLLOWING CORE BELIEF:
Expanding our civilization throughout the Solar System is essential for our long-term health & prosperity and the survival of our species. Whether relieving environmental stresses here on Earth, preserving human biology and history against an extinction cataclysm, or simply to satisfy the insatiable human thirst for exploration, our only path to a long-term future lies off of the Earth.
Guaranteeing the public, political, & governmental support necessary to continue this expansion requires the broadest, deepest, most engaged coalition of support possible. It is also critical that this great leap is made with a full view of history, in order to guard against injustice and ensure this new future is created by, and delivers benefits to, all of humanity.
Nirgal is a word with two different and very important meanings. The English Nirgal is the modern form of the Bablyonian Nergal, their name for the Red Planet, Mars. Nirgal Vallis is also the name for one of the largest and most obviously water-carved valleys on Mars, which empties into Gusev Crater, the landing site for the 2004 Spirit Rover, which eventually uncovered evidence of past liquid water on the surface.
Nirgal best captures the civilization-spanning nature of this enterprise. It refers simultaneously to one of the earliest recorded names any civilization has given to another heavenly body, and also one of the most Earth-like features on Mars, our next most likely home, and the site of some of our most profound scientific discoveries off of the Earth.
